You are assigned to analyze one of these videos according to the following groups:
Group 1: PS124
(Elementary and Middle) Jacque, Paul, Susan, Emily, David, Joel, and Anne Marie

Group 2:Upper Merion H.S.:
(Secondary) Jennifer, Courtney, Megan P., Barb, Suofei, Cuiling, Michael I.

Group 3:Ithaca College:
(Adult/College) Brenda, Mike H., Ben, and Megan W.

For this activity, we will be using a modified protocol called Believing and Doubting, adapted from the work of Peter Elbow. Within your assigned group, discuss the following:

Believing: In what ways (if any) does your assigned video case illustrate and uphold the fair use guidelines and the Codes of Best Practices?

Doubting: In what ways (if any) does your assigned video case falls short of the fair use guidelines and the Codes of Best Practices?

Keep in mind that there are many layers to these videos -- the first is the actual scenario in the video, but the second is that these videos are now available on YouTube, and then I am using them in my course. … .be specific with examples from the video and support your examples by citing the Code of Best Practices.

Be prepared to debrief your discussion with the rest of the class. If done early, please look at the videos from the other groups.

After each group has shared, we will discuss as a class:

Take Away:
  • Now that you have a better understanding of fair use, do you feel that this will affect how you will use media in your classroom in the future? - Ben
  • What are ways for disseminating "fair use" best practice guidelines to teachers? - modified from Barb
  • What should we teach our students regarding "fair use"? - modified from Megan P.

Assessment: Why do you think that I require that we use copyright-free images for our online textbook?
